| Concealed Hinge Concealed hinges are on the interior of a door and cannot be seen from the outside. They are most commonly used with cabinets and other small doors rather than large walk-through doors. Typically concealed hinges include a clip that allows them to be taken apart, letting you remove a door without unscrewing the hinges. 1.
Selecting Hinges The first step of selecting a concealed hinge is deciding whether you need face frame hinges or frameless hinges. Face frame hinges are used for cabinets with an interior frame on the front, blocking the cabinet walls from having hinges installed. Frameless hinges are used in cabinets that have a wall available for the hinges to be installed into.If you want to be able to remove your cabinet door without unscrewing the hinges, purchase concealed hinges that clip apart. This can be useful if you ever decide to repaint or stain the cabinet doors. You need at least two hinges for each cabinet. For large cabinets with doors more than 3 feet tall, purchase three hinges, and for cabinets with doors more than 5 feet tall, purchase four hinges. Some hinges open farther than others. The amount that a hinge opens will be listed on its packaging. You should purchase hinges that open at least 100 degrees so that you can easily access your cabinets. There is no need to purchase hinges that open more than 180 degrees, because the door will at that point be blocked by the cabinet next to it. 1. Installation
Install the hinges by first screwing the longer end of the hinge into the cabinet wall or cabinet frame. If you are installing two hinges, place each a few inches from the top and bottom of the cabinet. A third hinge should be installed in the center. Four hinges should be installed equidistant from each other, at the top and bottom of the cabinet.Screw the other end of the hinges into the cabinet door. Leave the hinges clipped together during this step. Although this will make it more difficult to screw in the hinges, it will ensure that the hinges are properly aligned. Leave a small gap between the cabinet and the door so that the door will be able to open completely. Some concealed hinges include screws that can be used to make minor adjustments to the alignment of the door. The packaging of the hinge will label which screws will move the door in which directions. Using these screws can be helpful for fixing minor alignment mistakes, and making sure all of your cabinet doors are level. |
